Spanish caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will seek a new term in a congressional vote on Nov. 16.
The debate to reelect Sanchez will start Nov. 15, with the actual election taking place the next day, Parliament Speaker Francina Armengol said Monday.
Sanchez clinched the necessary majority in the 350-strong Parliament last week after striking a deal with Catalan separatist party Junts per Catalunya, whose seven lawmakers will vote for him. In exchange the government will pass an amnesty law that will benefit hundreds of activists facing criminal charges for their involvement in the Catalonia’s failed attempt to break away from Spain in 2017.
The deal is facing strong criticism from the opposition but also from judges, prosecutors, security forces and civil servants, who say it goes against the rule of law.
