FTSE Indexes Suffer Brief Outage in UK, Italy, South Africa

Three stock indexes calculated by FTSE Russell briefly stopped updating for about half an hour on Friday, marking at least the second outage among European exchanges in the past month.

Equity benchmarks tracking stocks in the UK, Italy and South Africa did not update for 38 minutes from about 9:10 a.m. in London, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and exchange websites. All three have since resumed regular trading.

There’s no sign that the disruption affected individual stocks. The shares on all three indexes show regular trading during the outage.

“Correct dissemination of the FTSE MIB index has been resumed,” Borsa Italiana said in a statement. Bloomberg has contacted FTSE Russell parent London Stock Exchange Group Plc for comment.

In October, a system “incident” halted trading in hundreds of shares on the London Stock Exchange for the final 80 minutes of Thursday’s session. The outage affected mostly smaller-cap equities, and stocks on the FTSE 100 Index, FTSE 250 and international orderbook weren’t affected, London Stock Exchange Group Plc said at the time.
