MONTE CARLO, MONACO: F1 recently decided to adopt a new marketing strategy to hopefully widen its audience base. As a result, there has been a big influx of influencers at the events. However, when Charli D'Amelio attended the Monaco Grand Prix, she had to bear the brunt of enraged F1 fans.
D'Amelio and her mother arrived in the paddock with VIP lanyards for the weekend as guests of APM Monaco, a jewelry manufacturer. The influencer had to succumb to the rude side of F1 Twitter amid photos with Noah Schnapp and videos from the starting grid.
Why F1 fans are angry with Charli D'Amelio?
Sponsors and teams are attempting to capitalize on the 'Drive to Survive' trend in order to broaden their target audiences. With 47.4 million followers, D'Amelio is the undisputed queen of influencer fame.
With just one post from the TikTok celebrity, the brand has attracted nearly 50 million supporters. And there's a lot more to it. Some fans noticed this rationale and supported the social media influencer. While others thought it was incredibly unjust that people with little expertise in the sport were invited to such unique experiences.
Charli D'Amelio brutally slammed on Twitter
Most fans were envious of the chaotic turn of events. As a result, conflict broke out. Fans were divided into two groups. While some said sponsorships are required, others argued that they were not. An F1 fan shared a video of D'Amelio attempting to master the rules of the sport and wrote, "Since u guys are being freaks here’s charli d’amelio’s friend teaching her about f1 during the race."
Another user wrote, "All these influencers who were invited to Monaco FOR FREE should’ve been asked to name at least 5 F1 drivers Leclerc and LH not included."
A few F1 fans that gave the influencer a chance were on the other side of the fight. One F1 tweeted, "Do ppl realize even if the influencers weren’t invited their a**es would still be at home on race day."
D'Amelio not only got to experience her first F1 race, but she also got the best one. Camille Gottlieb, a TikTok influencer, met D'Amelio at Monaco Grand Prix and they joined for lunch with French social media personality Lena Situations and APM Monaco chief Kika Prette.
